2008 -2009 Jays Kids Club Wrestling
Dear Parents:
The information below will give you a general idea of our program. If you have other questions please write or call.
Parent Meeting and 1st practice is Monday, December 8, 2008 @ 6:00 in JC High School Cafeteria. You can sign-up then or we will have the registration forms on our website. A Birth Certificate is required in order to practice and compete in tournaments.
Practices are twice per week usually on Monday and Thursday from 6:00 to 7:45 in the high school wrestling room. Practice time will decrease as the season progresses. The season ends for most in March and for some the last week in March 2009. We practice in the high school wrestling room which is an outstanding facility. The wrestlers are split into two groups, experience and non-experience. This allows each wrestler to progress at their own pace and allows them to practice with other wrestlers with like abilities. We have parents that help during practice, but in order to coach at the tournament the coaches must be certified. Something new this year is each coach will have to submit to a background check. A prospective coach must meet with me and Jeff Wyatt, the JC head wrestling coach so they know what our expectations of a coach are before we allow them to coach your wrestler. We emphasis fun and fundamentals and require our coaches to sign commitment agreement to that end.
Competition is by age and weight. The age groups are 6 and under, 8 and under, 10 and under, 12 and under and 14 and under. To know which age group your wrestler is in ask yourself this question; “On January 1, 2009 my wrestler is how old? The weight groups are generally in increments of 5 pounds. For example, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 etc. For example if your wrestler weights 51 pounds, the wrestler is in the 55 pound class. We do not encourage weight loss and we weigh and chart each wrestler’s weight weekly at practice.
Cost: Jays Kids Club does not charge any type of membership fee however there is other cost associated with the program.
$30.00 for USA Wrestling Membership Card of which $10.00 of this goes towards secondary insurance. We have not attended our state wide meeting so I am not sure if this cost will go up. It has been $30.00 for years.
$20.00 Singlet (uniform) rental. We require a $45.00 deposit of which $25.00 is refunded once the singlet is returned in good condition. A Club T-Shirt will be given to all participants free of charge. You only need a singlet if you’re going to compete in tournaments.
$50.00 deposit for Jacket warm-up. We hold your check and do not deposit the check unless you do not return the warm-up at the end of the year.
$12.00- $15.00 tournament entry fee. Tournament participation is optional and they are generally on Saturday’s we have some Sunday tournaments. We have the state series tournaments at the end of the year, district (everyone eligible who chooses to participate, regional (qualifying tournament) state (qualifying tournament) Also for first year wrestlers there is a Rookie State tournament only wrestlers who are in their first year or are 6 and under can compete and it is optional with no qualifying. Our club hosts a tournament each year which is free for our wrestlers and relay on parent participation to help run the tournament.
$30 and up for wrestling shoes. Not mandatory but highly recommended. The club and high school may have shoes you can borrow dependent upon the size.
$25.00 and up for head gear. Mandatory the club has some head gear that you can borrow.
The club does sponsor kids based upon financial need which covers the cost for all or part of the above. You can speak to me directly and this information is not shared with other club members. We have had some problems in the past sponsoring kids who are not in need or we pay initial cost and they quit. Therefore, if you are interested in the club sponsoring your wrestler (s) I will be asking you some personal and confidential questions in addition I will be talking to your child about his/her commitment to the program.
Please note that our club website needs to be updated and some of the information contained is outdated but it gives you a general idea of the program. I encourage you offer suggestions for improvement or ideas of what you would like to see added. We will do our best to make this a great website.
