Albany to finish season at Kingston

The Bulldogs last game of the regular season will be versus perennial CDYR power Kingston on Sunday, May 13.

Rugby continues through the summer months -

Capital/North Select Side - an "all-star" team from CDYR and Adirondack. Practices are on Wednesdays, 5-7 (May 16, 23, and 30), and Sunday, June 3, 11-1, rotating from Saratoga to Albany. A warm-up game is tentatively set for June 3, and the team will play a tournament in Wilbraham, MA, on June 16-17.

Olympic Rugby - Seven-a-side rugby begins practices after Memorial Day. Tournaments will be held Friday evenings from 5-11 on June 15 (Schenectady HS), June 29 (Shenendehowa HS), and July 13 (Dietz Stadium, Kingston)

Liberty Games - New this year, New York's replacement for the Empire State games will be held on July 20 and 21, at a Capital District venue (TBD). It will include 7s rugby at the high school and club level.

Saranac Lake Can-Am - if we get enough interest, we'll schedule a 15s game (or two?) at the tournament in Saranac Lake on July 2, with the Adirondack Barkeaters. Maybe add some players from Schenectady or Rensselaer to fill out the side?

Bulldogs win lineout vs. Southern Tier

Berkshire kicks, chases to win

Berkshire United followed a kick & chase game plan perfectly to make the most of the little ball they won to take a 26-17 decision over the Bulldogs. Albany controlled the majority of the set pieces and produced a great deal of ball, but was unable to counter the Berkshire attack when the ball fell into the opponents hands.

Byron Hopkins got the Bulldogs started at the 7 minute mark with a 30 yard drop goal that split the posts. But that was the only scoring opportunity that Albany could take advantage of in the first half against a fierce Berkshire defense. United's Malik Wilbon, however, lofted every ball he got his hands on, and with the help a fielding miscues by the Albany defense, Berkshire was able to touch down two trys and convert, to take a 14-3 lead at the half.

The second half continued as the first half ended, with Albany dominating the scrums and spoiling the Berkshire line-outs. But Wilbon continued to get the ball in the air and Berkshire's speedy backs were able to gather it in for another converted  try at the 43 minute mark. Berkshire took the ball in again at 47 minutes, but missed the conversion for a 26-3 lead.

But the Bulldogs battled back, and were able to push in at try at 54 minutes, touched down by lock Jesse Mesick. Hopkns converted, and Albany seemed to have plans for a come back. The Berkshire defense stiffened, and kept Albany out of the try zone until scrum-half & captain Matt Smith was able to sneak in under the posts as time expired, and Hopkins slotted the kick for the final score.

Man of the match awards were given to Berkshire's Wilbon and the Bulldogs' Sean Gordon.
