Held to only two hits over the first five innings Sunday, the Norwood Blues erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to score a 4-2 victory over the Ducks in the championship game of the Diamond Wars wood bat tournament.
Jake Romano tripled home a run and scored on a single by Ty Cellinger to pull the Blues even in the sixth against Ducks relief pitcher Griffin Pivarunas. Norwood scored what turned out to be the game-winning run when designated hitter Mark Brown singled and Cellinger came all the way around to score on a two-base error by the right fielder.
A two-out single by Vito Derango tacked on an insurance run for the Blues, who had advanced to the finals with a forfeit win over the Northern Crush.
Left-hander David Tortorici, who relieved starter Zack Dickstein in the fifth, earned the victory on the mound by retiring the last seven batters he faced.
Ducks' hurlers Eric Littler and Pivarunas surrendered just two infield singles before Norwood's late rally. The Ducks, who eliminated the Meanstreets Wildcats 6-0 in the semifinals, plated a pair of runs in the fifth in the title game on an RBI triple by Sean Grannan and Zach Steele's subsequent squeeze bunt.
